What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been! I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about a lot of different things, and haven’t been able to organize my thoughts into a valuable blog post.
We’ve visited a new church in our new town, and have really enjoyed it!
The first Sunday we were there, the sermon was about David in the time following the fight with Goliath, and how there are 3 different types of friends illustrated – fickle, fake, and faithful.
Fickle friends change their minds. The pastor gave Eli Manning as a good example. Prior to his Super Bowl win, it was common to hear comments such as “He can’t finish a game,” or “He’s not a winner”. But after the big win, the same people who used to say those things are now saying “Eli Manning may be one of the best QB’s we’ve seen in a while!”
Fake friends (like Saul) say one thing, and act another way, like when Saul would honor David publicly, yet try to kill him in private while he’s playing harp.
Faithful friends do what needs to be done regardless of the sacrifice. At Kanakuk, it was called living an I’m Third life, and it was a good reminder of how I should be approaching my family, as well as my friends.
Anyway, it was a good sermon, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the church so far.
I’ve also been thinking about how in 1 Samuel, when the Philistines captured the Ark of God’s Covenant, everywhere it traveled the people became ill, and many died. All this happened while the Israelites were mourning the loss of thousands of men, and several leaders. It was a reminder that, even when I am spent, and the work of childrearing and homemaking has overcome me, the Lord is still working in the hearts of the children, and in my heart, too. The battle truly does belong to the Lord. What a great encouragement when the days get long!
